North Beach at sunrise

Making a home away from home is always a bit of an adventure. At first, everything feels new. You’re figuring out where to go, how the days flow, what becomes part of your routine. And then, almost without noticing, life settles. The unfamiliar becomes familiar. The places you once searched for become the ones you return to without thinking.

Just as that happens… it’s time to leave. It always feels too fast. We met at North Beach on their last morning in Kailua before the beach filled with people. It felt like we had the space to ourselves. The kids ran ahead like they always do with Maple close behind.

There’s something about photographing a “last” that shifts everything slightly. You notice more. You slow down. The way they stand together, the way the kids move between them, the way the light hits the water, it all feels like it matters just a little bit more.

They had made a life here. Not in big, dramatic ways, but in the quiet, everyday ones. The rhythm of island life. The small routines that slowly turn a place into something that feels like home. And now, they were packing it all up. Heading back to a place that once felt like home, and will again.

That’s what these photos hold. Not just where they were, but how it felt to be there. Because making a home somewhere, even for a little while, leaves its mark. And sometimes, all you need is one early morning by the ocean to remember it.
